Many of us have one or several
habits that we consider bad and we want to break, but not all of us know how to
do it. Perhaps, the worst thing about bad habits is when they rule our life.
Before you start breaking your bad habits, you need to realize them first.
Write your bad habits down and follow 9 tips that will help you to get rid of
them.
1. Break one habit at a time
If you have a few habits, don’t
try to break them all at once. This way, you won’t break any of them. Break one
bad habit at a time, starting with the worst one. Find out which habit is
harming you the most and begin with that one. If you get rid of one habit, it
will be easier to break the other bad habits.
2. Find out your triggers
It’s important to know why your
habit is harming you and why you can’t break it. Find out your emotional
triggers and work on clearing them. Maybe you had a few failed relationships
and you drink alcohol, hoping it will help numb the pain. However, alcohol will
not solve your problems and will not make you feel better. Drinking alcohol is
destroying the body and you should realize it and get rid of this bad habit.
3. Team up with your friend
If your friend or family member
is going through a similar problem, team up with them. Help one another get rid
of the bad habit. After all, it’s always better to deal with the problems together
than alone.
4. Choose a substitute
Stop using up your energy and
time feeding your bad habit, look for a healthier substitute instead. If you
are trying to quit smoking, you can satisfy the craving by munching on a
healthy snack. It will help to distract you and get rid of your bad habit. Just
be patient because it will be hard the first few months.
5. Spend more time with people who
encourage you
When you are trying to get rid
of your bad habits, surrounding yourself with people who encourage you to live
a happier life is a must. If you want to live an alcohol-free life, a drug-free
life, or a stress-free life, avoid people who are keeping you stuck in your bad
habit. You should also avoid toxic people. Spend more time with positive people
and you will become more positive as well.
6. Make barriers to your habit
One of the most effective ways
to get rid of a bad habit is to create barriers to it. If you want to quit
smoking or stop drinking, ask your friend or family member to monitor your
cigarette or alcohol intake. If you want to stop eating unhealthy food or
biting your nails or whatever, create barriers that will help make it hard to
turn to this bad habit.
7. Reward yourself
Everyone loves to get rewarded
when doing a great job. Feeling a sense of accomplishment is a wonderful
feeling. When you resist temptation, feel free to reward yourself. Buy a new
pair of shoes or a gorgeous dress, get your nails done, or simply eat your
favorite cookie.
8. Stay patient
Getting rid of a bad habit can
be extremely difficult and even painful at times, so it’s important to stay
patient no matter what. Remember, you won’t break your bad habits over night.
Learn to be patient and dedicated to achieving your goal and you will
definitely see the results. Everything is possible, when you have patience to
do it.
9. Stay positive
No matter what others say or
think about you, you should believe in yourself and do what you think is right.
Believe that you are strong and you are able to break any bad habit. Compliment
yourself every day and tell yourself that you’re the master of your own life
and you have the power to make your life what you want it to be.
When dealing with a bad habit,
you should remember that you’re stronger than your bad habit and you’re a
wonderful person. Even if no one believes in you, you should believe in
yourself and your strengths. I believe in you and I’m sure that you will get
rid of your bad habit no matter how hard it will be! Do you have any bad
habits?
